In This Video We Are Looking At TUXEDO OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution developed in Germany by TUXEDO Computers GmbH, designed and optimised for the company's own range of Linux-friendly personal computers and notebooks. The distribution uses KDE Plasma as the preferred desktop. Some of the differences between Ubuntu and TUXEDO OS include custom boot menu, the TUXEDO Control Centre, Calamares installer, availability of the Lutris open gaming platform, preference for the PipeWire audio daemon (over PulseAudio), removal of Ubuntu's snap daemon and snap packages, and various other tweaks and enhancements.

The Augsburg hardware and software company TUXEDO Computers supplies its in-house hardware with its own Linux distribution, Tuxedo OS. While Tuxedo OS was more or less reserved for Tuxedo customers until now, this is now changing so that Tuxedo OS is now freely available to everyone.

Technically, Tuxedo OS 1 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 and comes with KDE – Plasma desktop, which is adapted to the Cooperate design. Also included are all the little helpers that Tuxedo donates to its distro.

:: More ::

After six months of development, TUXEDO Computers from Augsburg is presenting TUXEDO OS 1 as a live ISO on its own website. The in-house TUXEDO operating system could previously only be installed online via WebFAI . Now not only TUXEDO owners, but everyone can use the distribution.

WebFAI with advantages and disadvantages
Behind this is the Debian project Fully Automated Installation (FAI) by Thomas Lange, which serves as the basis for WebFAI to automatically install TUXEDO OS and other supported distributions in the same way as it is installed in production. Thus, even absolute beginners who have purchased a TUXEDO notebook dare to reinstall it.

However, the process has one major disadvantage, because all connected hard drives apart from Windows are completely erased in a dual-boot situation. Also, no individual partitioning is possible.

That's why the Tuxe from Augsburg decided to make the new TUXEDO OS 1 available in parallel as a live ISO. This allows more experienced users to customize their installation, as they are used to from other distributions.

But what makes the new TUXEDO OS 1 special?
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS serves as the basis for TUXEDO OS 1, KDE Plasma in version 5.24.6 was chosen as the desktop environment, and Linux 5.15 is delivered as the kernel. The changes and developments that have gone into the in-house operating system go far beyond cosmetics to adapt to the corporate identity.

Let's start from the beginning. The GRUB boot menu contains entries for the WebFAI for notebooks and desktop devices, which can carry out a fully automatic installation without the WebFAI stick that is otherwise required. The only requirement is a connection via LAN cable.

Little helpers
Added the TUXEDO sub-menu to the Plasma main menu, which offers some useful functions. In addition to the option to install via the Calamares installer and the TUXEDO Control Center (TCC), a WebFAI Creator is integrated, which creates an image that corresponds exactly to the delivery status of TUXEDO devices.

Then there are the entries for auto-repair and chroot. Both are repair functions, with the former running automatically and being based on TUXEDO Tomte . The chroot function creates a change root with two clicks , which allows changes to be made in the installed system. Anyone who has ever created a chroot by hand will appreciate the advantages of this simplified setup.
