Concept is called FRC/frame rate control/temporal dithering. On a still image, pixels rapidly flicker between colors to simulate an in-between color.

Apparently affects all eink monitors and BENQ monitors.

Apps are called Stillcolor and BetterDisplay.

Affects Apple silicon M1 chip and later Mac devices. macOS needs to fix this.
