FoEhints: City Walls in Forge of Empires
Sometimes you can already find new elements on the beta server, even if the actual test run hasn't started there yet. Nevertheless, I always want to inform you about new developments as early as possible, even though some things may change until the release.
Many players, especially in the early ages, missed being able to protect the city with a city wall. To protect new players, after the development of the Fortification technology in the Bronze Age, a palisade can be built around the city.
It should be noted that the palisade cannot be built on the area that can be built on with normal buildings, but only on tiles directly adjacent to it. Thus, the palisade does not cost any space in the still very small city.
Palisades bring 10 happiness per sector in the Bronze Age. This makes sense, because a well-protected population is visibly more enthusiastic. Although the wall segments are decorations, they cannot be polished by other players. With a price of 10 coins and 10 supplies, they are also affordable for Bronze Age players.
Additionally, each element of the city wall adds a 1% defense bonus to the city defense. However, this is not cumulative. That is, either the sum of all other city defense bonuses is taken when defending the city, or the bonus from the city wall, whichever is higher.
Only if the city wall encloses the entire city without gaps a third advantage is added. The looting defense effect of the Galata Tower is doubled, which at least theoretically allows for complete looting protection for the first time.
Upon advancement to the Iron Age, the previous palisade becomes a city wall. It now provides 2% defense bonus per segment and 20 happiness. These values also increase in the Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, Late Middle Ages and Colonial Age.
However, this new protection is only available to players in the lower ages. In the Industrial Era, the walls slowly decay and finally disappear completely at the turn of the century, at which point all the positive effects are gone. From this, you can see that this new element of the game is primarily to protect new players who have previously been badly affected by Iron Age battle cities and other players who becamp the lower ages for a long time. Personally, I think that InnoGames always has good ideas on how this game can evolve in terms of the players.
