Former Black model debunks fast fashion and discusses the benefits to shopping vintage
As of 2023, fast fashion has been on the rise. Popular for their inexpensive clothing on top of the latest trends, fast fashion companies generate billions of dollars in revenue annually.
In the current age of fashion trends, we’ve come to a crossroads: is it better to buy fast fashion or vintage?
Vintage curator Sheryl Roberts says yes to shopping vintage. Roberts believes that with the environmental and ethical harms that come with fast fashion, shopping vintage can have many benefits.
Sheryl Roberts, a former model and actress for over two decades, began her personal brand as Indigo Style, flooding Instagram with her colorful outfits and charm. Her brick and mortar, the Collective at Indigo Style, became an homage to her youth, the days where she would frequent garage sales and thrift shops with her mother.
Roberts now owns and operates The Collective at Indigo Style out of Bed Stuy, Brooklyn and aims to educate consumers on the benefits of buying vintage versus fast fashion.
Roberts states that vintage fashion allows you to own high-quality clothing that no one else has, unlike fast fashion brands that mass produce clothing that you will only wear once and eventually throw away. Besides its unique style, vintage also helps reduce waste to the environment, and the high quality of the clothing offers a longer wear time and a high re-sell value.
The Collective offers small gifting items and personal care from sage and incense to graphic t-shirts and made to order clothing items.
You can visit The Collective at Indigo Style at 409 Lewis Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11233.
