From 1940 to 1942, Fort Benning grew its population fivefold as thousands of soldiers attended Infantry, Airborne, and Officer Candidate schools during World War II. Nearby Columbus, Georgia, also experienced dramatic growth that continues to shape the city and its relationship with the Army 80 years later.
