This is the tutorial segment for Freespace, and I'm playing this via the Freespace port, which ports the original Freespace over to Freespace 2's stronger engine via the Freespace Open Source Code project (aka Freespace Open/ SCP), and the Media VPs upgrade which improves the graphics, provides remixed music and custom campaigns, and fixes buggy mission parameters. If you are new to either the game or the mod, you will want to watch this.
If you want to get the Freespace Open mod yourself, you will need to get Freespace 2 (not the original)- a good place to do so is GOG.com. When you download the game, memorize the directory you install it in- you'll need that for later. The mod can be found at Hard-Light.net- go to downloads, and look for the Freespace Open Installer- this nifty little program will do the file downloading and installing for you. An updated version of Java is required, so if you don't have a sufficient version, go to Java.com to download the lastest version. Once you have the installer running, you will need to point it to the folder where Freespace 2 is installed so it can plug the downloads in correctly. The "Custom install" mode will show you the dozens of different mods and campaigns that have been created by the community, among which are Freespace port and its MediaVP upgrade. Select those mods and any others you want, and the installer will take over from there. When it's done, go to your Freespace 2 folder, click the Launcher (it looks like a pawprint), select the mods you want, then hit run to start the game.
The Freespace series is created by Volition and Interplay. The port is made by the Freespace Open Source Code Project, based on Hard-Light.net. I do not own the game or mod, and have not been affiliated in their production- I'm just making a show about how awesome and fun this game is, and not saying I own it.
