Upon release, Friday the 13th: The Game received a score of 65/100 indicating "mixed or average" reviews on Metacritic, based on six critic reviews. IGN's Daemon Hatfield praised the elements when playing as Jason, but criticized the gameplay when playing as a teenager along with glitches that nearly kill the mood of the "dumb fun". Polygon opined that "Friday the 13th: The Game mimics the surface level of the classic film series, but misses the spirit." GameSpot censured the console incarnations for being "intermittently unplayable", elaborating that "Private matches with friends are sometimes possible, but if you wish to join up with a band of strangers online from the comfort of your couch, you're either entirely out of luck or stuck waiting upwards of ten minutes for a match--after days of not being able to play at all." Gamespot also cited a lack of maps, inconsistent frame rates, poor animations, and deficient collision detection as reasons for finding Friday the 13th to be unfinished at launch. In contrast, the site listed the asymmetrical premise and Jason Voorhees gameplay as redeeming qualities.
