Time to check out the Federation Cruiser series, starting with a ship that looks incredibly "stock" - Kestrel A's stock weapons bolted onto a Federation Cruiser chassis with a regular "vindicator" Artillery Beam that pierces all shields to do 1 damage to multiple rooms. In theory it combined Federation A's good crew and artillery beam with Kestrel A's good weapons, so this should be stronger than both... so, will it play out that way, then?

Here's the forum thread I mention about midway through, stating that auto-ships and Slug ships have slightly more reactor power than they actually use, so wind up with more power in ion storms:
