The key components of a newbie-friendly Red-Tail strategy are as follows (in no particular order)
1. Acquire a Rockman or a second Mantis, then a teleporter. This helps in the final fight.
2. Acquire hacking or mind control for additional support in the final fight (and throughout).
3. Acquire a Defense Drone Mark 1 (or Mark 2, now that it's been buffed) and the drone system for protection against missiles, flak, hacking, and assault drones. The defense drone does a LOT!
4. Build on your starting laser firepower by employing a laser-focused strategy. In this game, I got the Vulcan Chain Laser, which warped things a little. But in general, upgrading your starting lasers to Burst Laser Mk 2's, a Flak Gun Mk 1, or the fast ion gun that the Torus (Engi A) starts with allows you to bypass enemy shields by simply overwhelming them with a barrage of lasers. This gives you one less resource to worry about (missiles), and although they didn't come up much in this run, you'll often encounter events that let you trade your useless missiles for scrap, fuel, drone parts, or even reactor upgrades.
