As I go back and remind myself of what some of gaming's best experiences were really like, the more I have come to realize that game developers, publishers - whomever is responsible for these decisions - simply do not trust players anymore. Our freedom to explore and engage with games on our own pace and in our own ways has been greatly limited, and it brings everyone down.
Hopefully games like Baldur's Gate 3 can help shift that a little bit.
