Shining Force (The Legacy of Great Intention) was released on the Sega Mega Drive in 1992 in Japan - and localized to the U.S and Canada in 1993.
Shining Force was innovative in that instead of controlling a single warrior or a small group of warriors - you control an army of soldiers in a turn-based system, games like The Hybrid Front, Advance Wars, and some Fire Emblem games follow a similar team formula.

This game is a stealth sequel/continuation of Shining in the Darkness. The main character in "canonically" named Max - a young knight who trains under Captain Varios.
Max is sent away on a mission to clear out an abandoned fort. Varios and the King gives Max five troops to command - Tao the Black Mage, Hans the Archer, Ken the Centaur Knight, Luke the Ax Warrior, and Lowe the Cleric.
