In this installment, I want to talk about Game of Thrones. Specifically, I want to talk about the thematic significance of White Walkers in the series in relation to ecology. Naturally, if you aren't caught up with the TV show, you're probably going to want to stop watching at this point. Specifically, if you haven't seen up to season 8, episode 2, you should know that I will be referencing events that have occurred up until this point. So, there's your spoiler warning.
Just a bit of context here: White Walkers are supernatural ice creatures. They have the power to turn corpses into undead soldiers called wights. The wall was erected thousands of years ago in order to keep the White Walkers from going south. In present day Westeros, most of the people south of the wall don't believe that White Walkers are real. But over the course of the series, the existential threat White Walkers pose on Westeros gradually makes itself apparent to each of the main characters.
