Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Playthrough
2006, X360; 2015, XONE. Rating: 3.5 out of 4 stars
While it’s tempting to compare Gears to Halo because of their futuristic settings, the two are very much opposite when it comes to their tone and approach. Halo has gone for a more sterile atmosphere whereas Gears gets right down to the nitty-gritty and has a more punishing and pessimistic viewpoint. This is shown in Marcus Fenix, who is not a particularly warm or friendly protagonist. He is doing things less out of idealism than pragmatism and even a little nihilism. That’s not an easy character to identify with, but luckily, a human side is slowly revealed through interactions with the rest of the team, particularly Dom. This helps keep the game from being a boring slog.
And it is a bit of a slog, but in a good way, with the combat being relentless and you fighting off wave after wave of enemies. It can feel a bit mechanical and repetitive at times, but the designers do a good job of keeping it fresh and varied. It is by no means an easy game, though, and even on casual difficulty experienced players are going to find themselves fighting an uphill battle with enemies. The controls work well enough, though moving in and out of cover can be imprecise at the wrong times. The ally AI also showed peculiar behavior at times. It’s still a superior action shooter and one of the finest games Microsoft has delivered.
The Ultimate Edition is almost a shot-for-shot remake with one exception: A longer fifth act that ties in the Brumak that is chasing the characters at the end of act four. While not necessary to the plot, it does a good job fleshing out one or two small plot points and it does not drag the action down or feel extraneous. Was it necessary? No, but it doesn’t hurt, either, and is a welcome addition.
