Here's what really happens: When Beta 1.3 came out, Wood slabs where introduced... but acted strangely. You could only obtain them with a pickaxe but no other tool (even your hand!). The reason was that the wooden slab shared the same ID number as the stone slab! But when 1.3.1 (Official release) came out, the wooden slab had their own ID, but the old wood slab remained. And if you had it in 1.5, the game would crash, because the missing texture wasn't introduced! After the missing texture was introduced, blocks with invalid ID's and unused blocks (The locked chest for example) had the missing texture. It wasn't until 1.13 (sanpshots at least) rolled around and it was an official block again! It was called the Petrified Wood Slab. That's the history of the "forgotten" slab in Minecraft.
