Getting trolled in Norway / Lets Play Through the Woods
Since I saw a lets play by John Wolfe for this game, I could not get it out of my mind, so I had to play it sooner or later on my own channel. Developed by CC and published by CC, this is the story of a mother looking for her son in the Norwegian woods. But is it really Norway or rather, is it Norway in the present?
So, Askeladden is a (cheeky) protagonist of a collection of fairy tales / folk tales back in the days. The name translates roughly to “Ash lad” which probably speaks for the fact that he is a younger kid without much ambition and from a moderate background.
You can read a bit more about it here: https://norwegianarts.org.uk/norwegian-folk-tales-more-than-fairytales/
And here’s the specific story that’s been referenced in the game: https://everything2.com/title/The+Princess+No-one+Could+Silence
The two artists most widely known for troll illustrations who have basically shaped how they are portrayed in pop culture are John Bauer and - my favourite - Theodor Kittelsen. His troll illustrations are genuinely creepy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll
And here’s the trailer for Valhala, the fantastic, cheesy kid’s movie that is chock-full of norse tales. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwAGt9dvZdo
The “Gathered Norway in one Kingdom” is probably a reference towards King Harald I Fairhair in the 9th century who literally unified the kingdoms of Norway and created the first Norwegian central government. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harald_I_of_Norway
