57Normally jumping will just crash the game, but if you're lucky it can give you a giant speed boost instead.
Old vid but I figure I'll upload. Onvar can explain better than me, but something weird happens when sonic goes from a tilted object directly onto a rail. some aspects of the object orientation are stored in memory, but if sonic gets far enough away from the object (while remaining on the rail) then the game will load other things into that space in memory.
