Today's selection of shooters is pretty sparse and those that are available tend to be of the bullet hell variety. Cave's Deathsmiles does a decent job of combining old school shooting fun with modern dodging challenges. It also features a gentle difficulty curve that abruptly spikes at the last level, punching your ego in the stomach and calling it hurtful names.

For a short game featuring no power ups to speak of, it's surprisingly addicting. You can select your level order (and difficulty per level) for the first handful of levels to mix things up. The western 360 port features six different editions of the game, each featuring various game play and graphic changes. Nothing too major, mind you, but still a nice touch.

Originally released in the arcades in late 2007, Deathsmiles feels more like a 90's Saturn title. It's heavy use of pre-rendered CG is very similar to Psikyo's Sol Divide and takes a little while to get used to. It's ugly, but in an endearing way. Keep in mind that due to current YouTube limitations I had to reduce the frame rate by half. The game looks much better running at a full 60 fps.

It does have a delightful soundtrack, however, with quite a few memorable tunes. I set the video to an arranged version of Burning Halloween Town from the first stage.

Footage was captured from the North American Xbox 360 port version using an AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable.
