Fun Facts:
- Early in college football history, the Minnesota Golden Gophers were a powerhouse and won Seven National Championships. Their last National Championship was in 1960
- Every year, Minnesota plays a rivalry game against the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the winner gets to take home the “Floyd of Rosedale” trophy, which is essentially a big bronze pig. This is arguably one of the coolest trophies in NCAA Football.
- Every year, Minnesota plays a rivalry game against the Wisconsin Badgers, and the winner gets to take home “Paul Bunyan’s Axe” which is exactly what it sounds like… a Big Axe
- Tony Dungy is most known for his time as a Head Coach for the Indianapolis Colts, and more recently as a contributor on Sports networks. However, back in his day, he was the Quarterback of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. His statistics, according to Sports-Reference.com, were… just okay. But he is certainly legendary in the realm of coaching.
- Minnesota is in the top 10 for college football teams with the most national championships in their history, with a total of 6. Funny enough – they are in tenth place. The last national championship for the Golden Gophers came in 1960.
- Unbelievably, the 1904 team went 13-0, outscoring opponents 725-12, which is one of the most dominant seasons in college football history. This averages out to about 56 points per game, against less than an average of 1 point per game for their opponents. And I don’t know how this is even possible, but one of their opponents was a HIGH SCHOOL TEAM, named “Twin Cities High School” from Minneapolis. The final score of that game was 107 – 0. But that wasn’t even the most gruesome victory on the schedule that year – they defeated Grinnell 146-0 as well… crazy. (Source: https://gophersports.com/sports/football/schedule/1904)
