Godzilla made his triumphant return to the big screen this summer and despite some complaints that a movie about Godzilla ended up featuring very little of the titular character, the film earned mostly positive reviews and took in an impressive $500 million plus at the worldwide box office. A sequel has already been set for 2018, but for those of you eager to get your Godzilla fix on, we’ve got good news. Japanese distributor and original Godzilla creator Toho has announced a new film is set to go into production this summer for a planned 2016 release. This will be the first Godzilla movie the studio has produced in a decade following 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars. After that film earned a disappointing $12 million at the box office, Toho decided to put a decade long hiatus on the character. Following the success of the US version this summer, the studio has decided to bring him back for another Japanese production in the hopes of introducing the character to an all-new generation of moviegoers. In order to accomplish the task, Toho has created a “Godzilla Strategic Conference” or “Godzi-Con” for short to help reboot the brand. The committee consists of various studio executives and directors and will be headed by veteran producer Taichi Ueda. Regarding the new film, Ueda said the budget will be considerably less than the $200 million of the US production, but declared quote, “The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.” The goal is not only to reboot the character they created, but also hopes to have Godzilla become an ambassador to Japan in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
