''Going the Distance'' is a romantic-comedy film that opens in U.S. theaters on September 3, 2010. ''Going the Distance'' stars Drew Barrymore and Justin Long as Erin and Garrett, a couple trying to survive the perils and pitfalls of keeping up a long-distance relationship. After a six-week "whirlwind" relationship in New York City, Erin, a budding journalist, goes back to San Francisco to continue her education. The new couple have to deal with problems that arise from their being so far apart. ''Going the Distance'' also stars Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate and Ron Livingston.

Reviews for ''Going the Distance'' began surfacing more than a week before the movie was due to hit theaters. Overall, the reviews for ''Going the Distance'' were poor to average, with the film garnering a 33 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer" and scoring a slightly higher 44 on Metacritic.

Some of the reviews were less-than-glowing. Kirk Honeycutt of ''The Hollywood Reporter'' said of ''Going the Distance:'' "It's hard to imagine any romantic comedy going wrong in so many different ways." Justin Chang of ''Variety'' called ''Going the Distance'' an "uneven effort" that "saddles its likable leads...with the kind of verbally exaggerated sexual humor that not only comes off as embarrassingly strained and calculated, but also compromises what the picture genuinely wants to be." Karina Longworth of the ''Village Voice'' also picks up on the verbal exaggerations, saying that "Distance is rated R because everyone swears excessively for no reason." Longworth notes that the movie's "supporting cast of smart comedians" including Jason Sudekis and Charlie Day are "saddled with delivering painfully dumb, often unnecessarily dirty dialogue."

Bottom line from the critics on this one: ''Going the Distance'' likely won't be able to go the distance at the box office.
