Golden Axe for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis was released in late 1989. It was an import from the original arcade version. Both developed and published by Sega.

Plot
In the land of Yuria, an evil entity known as Death Adder has captured the King and his daughter, and has held them captive in their castle. Death Adder also finds the Golden Axe, the magical emblem of Yuria, and threatens to destroy both the royal family and the axe unless the people of Yuria accept him as their ruler. Three warriors set out on a quest to rescue Yuria and defeat Death Adder and his soldiers. The first of the warriors is a male barbarian called Axe Battler, wielding a two handed broad sword, looking for revenge against the death of his mother.
The second is an axe wielding dwarf called Gilius Thunderhead, from the mines of Wolud, whose twin brother was killed by the soldiers of Death Adder. The last warrior is a long sword wielding amazon called Tyris Flare, whose parents were both killed by Death Adder.
