A 90's gaming masterpiece. Rare Limited’s Goldeneye 007 was released for the Nintendo 64 on August 25, 1997. Despite being 24 years old, this game still sits near the top of many, many 90s gamers’ top ten video games lists. It was glitchy, had several design flaws and featured a control scheme that hasn’t aged gracefully — but none of that really matters.
For many people, it was their first time getting their hands on a first-person shooter game. For others, it was the first time staying up all night long competing against a living room full of friends, and creating lasting memories. Shooters might be everywhere these days, but this game is a legend, particularly as it has paved the way for other modern franchises to rise.
An atmospheric single-player campaign with stealth elements, parts of the body hit for varying damage (which was revolutionary for it's time), it's distinctive and high quality soundtrack (heavily inspired and uses sound assets from the film) and it's renowned console multiplayer deathmatch mode. It was one of the very first major games to incorporate multiplayer into the first-person shooter genre for the home console. It seems silly to think about nowadays that there weren’t any games that brought groups of friends together into the same living room, playing on the same console, and splitting the same TV into four different sections.
It begs the question why it's Remastered edition made by Rare, that was supposed to come out on Xbox 360 was never released as they did own the rights; for a time. I bet the developers were frustrated as the remaster was 99.9% completed, before being told they couldn't release it. There are recent rumors however that this game may come to Nintendo Switch. Hoping this happens as many others can enjoy/look back at this game.
In early 2021, leaked beta files of this remaster have been put online and now it is available for PC gamers to play. Here is my full and first ever playthough, and I even got hold of an N64 Controller, just for this occasion! I hope you all enjoy the playthough.
