If anything explains the success of Golden Sun as a microfranchise, it's the consistency and initial appearance of quality. It came out as a strong rpg on the gba for lack of better games, the soundtrack was excellent, and the graphics were adequate. It was a game that made young people feel like they were going on a journey, from medieval lands to the Orient. It's sequel only existed because the game was too big to fit on a cartridge, which led to investiture in the series. It doesn't help that most of what's completely offensive about the script is concealed from the player until the second installment, making it difficult for your average gamer to find fault with it, despite intense incompetency.
That's all well and good. It's 2017 now.
