Gotta Keep That Gate Clean! Chichuki Plays Gatekeeper
It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time, we're looking at Gatekeeper on Steam. Fans of action Roguelikes will want to take a look at this one! The Heart of Time has been stolen by Chaos’s most powerful minions and it's up to you to get it back!
Let me start out by saying that Gatekeeper can played solo or with friends. I played it solo for the hands-on video but I think you'd get more out of the experience playing with other people. It's WAY WAY more challenging with just one person. AT the same time, it's more fulfilling to beat a boss by yourself.
You will have to think on your feet as there will be several waves of enemies coming at you while you try to perform tasks. One playthrough, you might have to activate beacons whereas another run you'll have to escort something from one side of the field to the other all while enemies are coming for you.
There are quite a few different variations of playable characters as well as different skills you can unlock/discover during your playthrough runs. I played the Hybrid character and the Nidum character. I really liked the Hybrid because they had speed attacks as well as range in terms of projectile attacks. I usually like the physical attackers like Nidum but in this instance, I didn't like having to get so close to the enemies. The Hybrid style was much better for me. I usually hate aiming with the right control stick but in this case, I found it very smooth and easy to aim.
You will have to learn your skills quickly as the enemies come at you quickly. Rely on your map to plan out your next move. I found in one of the boss encounters that if you lure it to a spot where there aren't any minions around, you'll have an easier time. This way, the only thing you need to dodge is the enemy and the only thing you'll be inflicting damage on is said boss. Learn strategies and combine that with skills and abilities and you'll have a great time.
I was going heavy on health when I found upgrades and could afford them. You gain currency by killing enemies. You can experience by doing the same. I really like that the action stops when you level up and gives you time to select an upgrade. The action on screen is insane at times so it's nice to have the game give you a little support by not having enemies attack while in menus.
If and when you perish in battle, you'll be sent to a hub location where you can upgrade skills, change items/weapons, and more. Learn what skills and attacks suit you and go from there. Gatekeeper is an action roguelike that goes hard into the action. It doesn't feel cheap as the action does give you time to think. You'll need it as boss encounters can be tough. I'm a fan of rougelikes and Gatekeeper is one you I'm going to keep an eye out for.
