GoXLR & Streamlabs OBS tips for separating audio sources
This is quite a specific video but hopefully someone will find it useful.
I use the GoXLR and a Shure SM7B for my mic setup for streaming and voice overs (https://youtu.be/lrIvGvSVKBc). This system downmixes all audio channels into a single source - Broadcast stream mix - which is great as it means you can adjust the volumes at hardware level and choose what goes into the mix easily.
The downside though, is that if you're recording and streaming (as I do to create gameplay clips) you sometimes end up with unwanted audio ruining those clips. This is a PITA.
I have this problem when my gaming friends are talking and happen to be talking about something right as something funny (or awesome) happens in game. If I save that clip, I'm then stuck with that audio sitting over the top of what would otherwise be an awesome clips. Which suuuuuuuuuuuucks. I can't easily adjust the levels or counter it.
However, I've found a really easy solution. Which involves these steps:
1 - Plug a 3.5mm cable into the line-out port on the GoXLR
2 - Plug the other end into the Line-In port on your PC
3 - Go into the GoXLR software and find the routing table.
4 - Adjust that table so the line only includes the outputs you want (in my case not chat)
5 - Go into OBS or Streamlabs OBS
6 - Go settings, Output, advanced mode, then set streaming to audio track 1
7 - Click the recording tab and set it to record track 1 and 2
8 - In the sound mixer click the settings cog
9 - Set broadcast stream mix as track 1
10 - Set line in as track 2
Now when you record you'll have one track being output to your stream - just the usual broadcast stream mix but recordings will have two tracks.
In my setup that means I get two audio tracks, one with everything for the stream and one with everything minus Discord chat. This means that where a friend was saying something irrelevant to the clip, I can just delete one of the audio tracks and use just the good one without their talking. But otherwise I can just delete the other track and use the main one. It makes it a lot more flexible really simply!
