Ever since the invention of computer-generated effects, there have been ways to use them well and ways to completely overdo them. Sadly, many directors have ruined otherwise great movies by going way too heavy on the CGI, completely taking audiences out of the movie and only drawing attention to the obvious special effects.

It was especially common in superhero movies for a while, like the infamously cartoonish Green Lantern that Ryan Reynolds continues to mock to this day, but hopefully, we are finally moving past it. Let’s take a look at some great movies that were ruined with special effects.
