Great Soccer is a soccer video game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Master System, released in 1985. As one of the early soccer games for the console, it aimed to provide a straightforward yet engaging soccer experience within the limitations of its technology.
I initially found the game intriguing because it reminded me of the glorious Exciting Soccer for the arcade. A friend owned Great Soccer, and we spent a couple of afternoons trying to recreate its excitement. However, while the Master System title shared some similarities, it fell short compared to the arcade classic.
From struggling to execute a sliding tackle to the difficulty of retaining possession of the ball for more than a second, the gameplay often felt unfair and frustrating. My friend once joked, “It’s called Great Soccer, but based on the AI’s attacking strategy, I'm sure it was originally a water polo game.” He had me in tears, but he was right. This is evident when observing the CPU's tendency to pass the ball endlessly when approaching the goal.
Long story short, Great Soccer is neither particularly good nor enjoyable, and it has not aged well.
Ps.
This should not be confused with the other Sega Master System soccer game titled Great Soccer' which was released in 1987. I uploaded a longplay video of that game a while back.
