Solitaire is a popular card game that is typically played by a single player, though there are versions that can involve multiple players. In Klondike Solitaire, the objective is to build up four foundation piles, one for each suit, in ascending order from Ace to King. The game begins with the player dealing out seven piles of cards, known as the tableau. The first pile has one card, the second has two, and so on, up to the seventh pile, which has seven cards. The top card of each tableau pile is turned face up, while the other cards remain face down.
The remaining cards form the stock pile, from which the player can draw cards to help build the foundation and tableau piles. For example, an Ace of hearts can be placed in an empty foundation pile, followed by the two of hearts, three of hearts, and so on.
In the tableau, cards can be moved between piles according to specific rules. Cards must be placed in descending order and must alternate colors. For example, a red six can be placed on a black seven. If a tableau pile is emptied, only a King can be placed in the empty space. Players can also move groups of cards within the tableau, provided the sequence and color alternation rules are followed.
The game is won when all cards are successfully moved to the foundation piles. If the player can no longer make any moves and the stock pile is exhausted, the game is considered lost.
There are many variations of Solitaire besides Klondike, including Spider, FreeCell, and Pyramid, each with its own set of rules and objectives. These variations provide different levels of difficulty and strategic challenges, making Solitaire a versatile and enduringly popular game. The game has been widely adapted into digital formats, often included as a default game on personal computers, which has significantly contributed to its widespread popularity.
