Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King (Piano Toccata)
24,650So here's my spin on this infamous piece by Edvard Grieg. This piece, originally from the play "Peer Gynt", is the perfect example of rising musical tension. The whole things sounds like an escalating musical argument. Fitting, seeing as the original music sets a scene where the crowd (made up of trolls, gnomes, and goblins) is working themselves into an uproar over what to do with the protagonist after he stole the affection of Mountain King's daughter.

This is my first arrangement on a classical tune. There are many arrangements of this infamous tune but the most widely played is Grigory Ginzburg's transcription which does a great job of capturing the original orchestral piece on piano. However I wanted to experiment around with the themes a bit and add my own style.
This piece is essentially made up of 4 phrases that repeat themselves over and over. This piece has a strong melody, ripe for variation. So I had fun coming up with different accompanimental styles to keep the piece fresh as it repeats the phrases. I had to dialed back some of my ideas in order to stick closer to the original. I may revisit this theme in the future because of it. Also I transposed the piece down to A minor because I wanted the lowest possible note for the beginning pedal point.
Also there are a fair number of little mistakes in this recording, as evident by the midi. Let me know if you want me to edit out those wrong notes in post for the midi for ease of learning. The audio will still be unediting unless otherwise noted.
