Grollschwert - 1 - Raising the curtain once more...
Well, it's finally happening. Not just the Grollschwert run, I mean, although that one's been on the list for a couple of years, but a sort of big change for this channel, too.
YouTube has, it feels, been quietly marginalizing the annotation editor more and more over the past couple of years or so, and they finally made the decision to pull the plug. Come May 2nd, my preferred form of adding commentary is going away. Maybe YouTube will backpedal on that decision and maybe they won't. I mean, there's legitimate uses for annotations besides commentary that cards and end screens don't really cover.
Regardless, that leaves me in sort of an awkward position with regards to producing content. A rational person would probably take that as his cue to retire, or at least invest in some proper video editing software. Me? Figure out a way to make something approximating an annotation in AviSynth and then write a Python script to build the dozen or so necessary function calls for me. Not perfect, but decent enough for a first pass, I hope.
Grollschwert will sort of be our test run for working out how to do commentary without the benefit YouTube annotations, so I'm going to be relying on your feedback on that subject over the course of the run. Let me know what you think of the current iteration and we'll try out new stuff and dial it in as we go. Thanks!
