Growl Arcade 1990 - 90s Video Games #28
Playthrough - Growl [Arcade 1990]
In the early 20th century, a ring of evil poachers is going around Africa slaughtering innocent animals. Players control Indiana Jones-like characters who try to stop animal poachers from torturing and killing wild beasts.
The game's controls consists of an eight-way joystick for moving the character and two action buttons (attack and jump). The player can perform a variety of different attacks (punches, kicks, and finishing blows) depending on the position of an enemy. By pressing both buttons while surrounded by enemies, the player can perform a special attack that strikes every enemy around him. By pressing both buttons while holding the joystick upwards, the player will perform a longer jump.
---Opinions
The major problem with Growl is that, outside of these amazing setpieces, it’s quite repetitive, even moreso than typical beat-em-ups. After the spectacular introduction, you fight the same handful of recolored enemies over and over (including Indiana Jones-style thugs, 1920s style newspaper boys, and women that appear to be nightclub singers), and most of the levels look exactly the same. Some kind of variation – heck, just giving the heroes different abilities – would’ve been nice.
The poor level of control over the player's moves. All the boss fights from the second one onwards are very unfair -- it seems you cannot beat them without taking a hit. A single boss can hit you over and over and kill you in seconds; Even when you manage to hit them first, their hitstun is so short they will still hit you more often, since your hitstun is longer -- which is where the other players should jump in and defend you.
