Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an action-adventure game with role-playing and stealth elements developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on October 26, 2004, for the PlayStation 2, and on June 7, 2005, for Microsoft Windows and Xbox. It is the fifth main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, and the seventh installment overall. Set within the fictional state of San Andreas, based on California, San Andreas follows Carl "CJ" Johnson, who returns home after five years in Liberty City to find his mother murdered and his family torn apart. CJ sets out to reassert his authority and take control of the streets, while also attempting to reconcile with his past.

The game is played from a third-person perspective, and its world is navigated on foot or by vehicle. Players complete missions—linear scenarios with set objectives—to progress through the story. Outside of missions, players may freely roam the open world at their leisure. Activities include exploring the game's landscape, engaging in combat, racing, and completing optional side missions.

San Andreas was developed using the RenderWare engine. Its development was hampered by numerous problems, including the September 11 attacks and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Despite these setbacks, the game was a critical and commercial success, becoming the best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time. It has been praised for its open-world gameplay, story, and soundtrack.
