As the name suggest, you can play alone in a public session. With some work, you can also play together with a friend in a closed open online session. There's a few things you need to do:

1 - Create this closed play session like shown in the video.
2 - Invite your friend to your session, or let them join you.
3 - Leave the session and put your internet settings back to normal.
4 - Join your friend's session, who should still be alone.

If you pick the right number that's compatible between the two of you, you should be able to play the whole evening/day alone, and if one player might join and also stick to your room, you both could vote to kick him from the session. You can do this once per few minutes, so when to much people join, you have to redo the whole session as described above again.

On Xbox this proccess is more user friendly, but it's good you can still make money and work without being killed all the time.
