Old Gunlance, New Word.

Lost Ark is if you haven’t heard about the game before, is a free to play action rpg mmo not very unlike diablo but with very high production values for a top down action rpg.

And have catched my eye from moment zero because of the inclusion of gunlance!

I love monster hunter gunlance and most who are watching me know it with my channel being a worship temple of the weapon.

I love the chunkiness, the weight, the power and explosions of the gunlance and how you are an immortal tank in the cannon wielding ones.

And Lost Ark’s gunlance is that?

YES!

Lost ark gunlance design and principles aren’t very far from monster hunter but cranked to the eleven.

It is slower, heavier, clunkier but also feels more powerful, staggering, explosive and satisfying.

Even the puny single shell attack has some hefty weight behind and the pokes are more decisive.

Then the powerful bread and butter attacks lifts waves of enemies from the ground and splat them sending blood and ribs everywhere.

It is the kind of weapon that an antisocial psychopath like me loves.

This offensive power is complemented with a signature power that creates a barrier around you that absorbs damage.

This combined with the staggering power of your attacks allows you to deal against waves of enemies clearing a path so you can move out, line the rest together and then blast them aways with your shelling attacks.

You also get another power with a hefty cooldown that protects the whole party if you are playing with other people.

Gunlancer is classified in the game as a support class but usually is not considered that way by the community. This is unlike paladin and bard, the other support classes, it can’t heal its companions.
Gunlance way to support the group is based in several things:
First it is the large staggering area attacks that makes enemies unable to fight back.

Then there are the mentioned signature moves that negate enemies.

Gunlancer is also the only class with a taunt, it is not as effective as other rpgs since it has a hefty cooldown and only lasts some seconds. However, it has a side effect of interrupting bosses movements and can save the party from a pinch.

And also has some upgrades that makes enemies take more damage.


This all together causes gunlancers to have an excellent damage uptime since enemies are more busy getting back on feet than attacking and this makes it being considered a dps class.

In short, gunlancer is a jack of all trades class. It deals good damage but is not the best and supports but is neither the best.

Gunlancers are considered popular to include in any party as the second support class after a paladin or a bard since having a very durable class that can be kept at full health while still doing good damage is a powerful combination.

Same for solo play, gunlance ability to ignore damage in a pinch and lots of crowd control moves makes it easy to survive any encounter.

I haven’t been able to play as much at the close beta than in the alpha and in this footage I just have started again to showcase all the possible unlockable skills or dig into pvp.

The lack of movement of gunlancer can be offset with a jump skill to quickly get into archers or a chain power that sucks enemies in. Also, due to the big range of the attacks you really don’t need to move around much, this is the kind of weapon where you let your enemies come at you only to be met with iron and gunpowder.


I will keep playing a bit more the close beta, I don’t know if I will be able to reach the endgame before it ends but be sure that I have fallen in love with this incarnation of the weapon and I will do guides and analysis once the game gets released.
