HACX (DOOM II Addon) - Full Singleplayer Playthrough (w/ commentary)
A total conversion created by Banjo Software, making use of a DeHackEd .exe and with the creators paying id Software for the rights to a commercial release. Containing many great new weapons to fire off and new monsters to shoot up, with great use of sounds and graphics. It's surely become one of my favorite TCs for Doom. It was a great success. After all, Doom never dies, right?
The story involves a hacker named Danny Evanger being apprehended after attempting to hack into GENIE, an AI and biotech system created by Genemp Corporation. However, it seems to have caused a global blackout with many mutants happening to roam the streets, so Danny was released and was given a Genemp Microtel enhancement chip which allows him to jump into cyberspace from computer terminals. Since every government agent has not returned from the situation, it is up for Danny to get to the bottom of this himself. After fighting his way through many locations and jumping into many terminals, all of the subcommittee have been killed off by the bad guys before he could report back to them. Only his fate has been decided by jumping into one more terminal...
The version of the game played is v1.1, the first freeware release. I had intended to play the v1.0 version, which was the initial release of the product, which had also come with a shareware version which contains the first four levels. 1.1 is actually an earlier version before the CD version, with differences such as maps 14 and 15 being swapped and MAP21 actually being playable in the latter, but sends you back to MAP01 upon completion, whereas in this release it "intentionally" crashes out the game because of a missing texture. Version 1.0 had more developer-friendly texture names which match the ones used in the game, but then this caused the texture references to get messed up so the previous version before that was released as "1.1", ridding the game of such bugs as well as making it easier to create more addon content for Hacx. Later, v1.2 was released, making it a standalone IWAD and recognized by many moden source ports, but of course you could be playing any version you want. Anything, right now!
