Half-Life 2: Update is a fan-made mod for Half-Life 2 which makes a large number of fairly subtle changes to the original game, mostly improving the lighting, shadows and distance detail of the original. It makes for a more modern experience graphically without changing the gameplay or mood of the original, a criticism that has been levelled against some of the other 'refresh' mods (though I've never played any of them either, so no axe to grind there).

Originally it was released only for Windows but the community has now produces a native Linux version of the mod. This version is free to play if you own the original Half-Life 2.
