Part of my Half-Life Fact Files series: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDmcwfn8y0lMtlqcpUhggk0FB1EC2i3iB

This is a demonstration of the early beta Xen maps that can be found in the 2003 Half-Life 2 leak. For this video, I have ported the source Source VMF files and compiled them so that they may be run in plain GoldSrc engine Half-Life.

These two levels demonstrate that the mines in Xen were originally intended to be longer with more linear puzzle-solving progression. The first map, c4a1y, is more developed and contains functioning enemies, scripts, and ambient sounds. Of particular interest is an odd water tank that holds dead scientists and their weapons. The following map, c4a1z, is less complete and only consists of one room. The changelevel trigger leads to a "c4a1x" map which does not exist in the leak files. Of note is that none of these levels contain Alien Controllers, suggesting they were added later in development.

Credit to Barnz for examining the levels.

Note: The first room in c4a1y is very dark, so the video has been brightened considerably during this section for viewing purposes.
