This is the very first public release of Firearms for Half-Life, an absolute classic game modification alongside others like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Day of Defeat. The files date it back to April 29th 2000 and I only recently discovered it in the depths of the world-wide web.

This video demonstrates some general traits of this first release candidate including:

- The 'Colt M4' not only fires a 100 round magazine, but it also fires in full automatic mode. The automatic fire was disabled shortly after version 1.0 was patched.

- Sound effects for various guns have different reloading and firing sounds. Some of the reloading sound effects appears to have been taken directly from another popular Half-life mod around that time (Counter-Strike).

- The M82 sniper rifle fires much faster and does not require crouching or staying prone to fire. This makes it a much deadlier and versatile weapon than most in this version, and was subsequently toned down dramatically in version 1.1 of Firearms.

- Some maps have objects and textures which were either removed or added in later patches. The map ps_waterfall is one of the more notable examples, with most of the rooms in each team's base missing furniture and having destructible gates to each base in version 1.0. The road between the bridge and each base has no capture point which was added in subsequent versions of the map, and textures underneath each control point indicating the amount people necessary to capture a point didn't exist in version 1.0 either.

- The Benelli M3 shotgun has an animation glitch when switching on or off the flashlight, the secondary fire mode on it. The animation in question is the last phase of the reload animation for the M3.

- The AK-47 has a much slower "firing rate" with the secondary fire, the bayonet. The stabbing rate with it was considerably sped up with subsequent patches.

- While carrying intelligence in the game mode 'Capture The Intelligence', the player can still equip and fire the previously used weapon by pressing the 'previous weapon' key. This makes carrying the intelligence less compromising as players can still defend themselves with a long-range weapon instead of having to rely on the knife which is the intended weapon for intelligence carriers. In subsequent patches, this exploitation was fixed and forces players on the same team to defend the carrier from the opposing team against gunfire.

Enjoy this retrospective demonstration!
