1)Uninstall any Windows Media codec packs that you’ve downloaded! Check control
panel/programmes and features.

2)Re-validate the game files if you have installed the game through Steam.

3)Delete and Verify
- Close Steam.
- Navigate to your game's folder, typically this is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Game Name]\ and delete the 'steam_api.dll' file.
- Go into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Game Name]\bin\ folder and delete the .exe file.
- Verify the game cache files following this guide:
4) launch in window mode
5) Launch the game in compatibility mode. To do this,

Right click on game executable, hit properties and under Compatibility,
set it to either Windows Vista SP2 or Windows XP SP3 compatibility.
