Hamlet Mild Cigar Advert (unaired) featuring a Dalek
"Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet" was an advertising campaign for Hamlet Cigars, which ran on television from 1966 until all tobacco advertising on television was banned in the UK in 1991. The campaign returned in cinemas in 1996, continuing there until 1999, with the final commemorative advert and the modified tagline, "Happiness will always be a cigar called Hamlet."
Hamlet cigar commercials would often feature famous comedians such as Russ Abbot, or Gregor Fisher (in his Baldy Man persona). However, if there is ever an ill-conceived guest star for a TV advert, it must be this one! The idea of featuring a character from a children’s BBC TV show to advertise cigars is, quite frankly, bizarre!
Despite its ridiculous premise, it’s hilarious, and I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did.
This particular advert was filmed, but never aired or broadcast. In it, a Dalek encounters an enemy even greater than the Doctor: Stairs!
