If you're having a hard time seeing the shapes while painting - here's a fun little solution!
The way you achieve this is by posterizing your reference photo (this works best with 3-4 values - white, gray & black).

Then, you select EVERYTHING that ISN'T white (Select - Color Range & click the white, then inverse selection) - color it gray - and that's you're first wash.
Then, (go back to posterized photo and) select EVERYTHING that ISN'T the lighter gray - and delete the rest.

And repeat every time with more values removed from the selection.
