He went down in his mind
in a hail of bullets
But the truth was so much more mundane

Life had piled up on him
And he struggled to break free
He imagined a pack of mermaids
Dragging him to sea
And the only thing that brought him back
Was the sound of his beloved
Softer than a cloud
It was hearts and gullets
Standing at the doorway
Between this life and the next
Knowing stepping through it
Meant not knowing what to expect
He came back to the world
Naked and serene
Nothing could ever touch him
Not the rhythm of the machine
Falling from the sky
Unseasonable rain
The future caught his eye
And he knew he must remain
