Heavy Gear II ► 1999 Mechs - Download & Gameplay on Windows 10
Abandonware Adventures! - Full playlist: http://goo.gl/vslwSk
Have you played Heavy Gear II? It's like MechWarrior but not! Giant customisable robots, complex detailed controls, and lots of destruction! [Video sponsored by LiquidSky : https://liquidsky.com/] Suggest something else I should play. Download link and installation instructions below!
#AbandonwareAdventures is a format where I find a good old game that is no longer for sale and play some of it. These are often PC games from my childhood that have been abandoned and I think need to be looked at again.

How to Install & Play #HeavyGear 2 on Windows 10:
1. Get the game here and mount the ISO in something like Daemon Tools
https://archive.org/details/Games_Machine_Heavy_Gear_II_Activision_1999
2. Install the game like normal, you don't have to install DirectX
3. Replace the shell.dll from the 'Heavy Gear 2 v1.0 [US/ENGLISH] Fixed DLL' to not crash on start. Click the blue disk icon next to 'File Archive' to open mirror options for download. (Careful about annoying ads on this site)

4. You might have to delete codecs to get the game to run. Some codecs cause the intro to play a black screen but with normal audio, then the main menu never loads. K-Lite can cause this and for me I had to uninstall my Media Player Codec.
IMPORTANT NOTE! - If you have the codec problem you will have a completely black screen and NO MOUSE CONTROL. You can alt-tab to your task manager but you won't be able to see anything on the monitor you tried to run the game on and no mouse at all. If you have a 2nd monitor you can solve this by opening your task manager and moving it to your 2nd monitor before trying to run the game. Then, if you get the black screen, alt-tab to the task manager and use keyboard controls to delete the Heavy Gear 2 process.
5. Running without compatibility mode seems stable but videos don't play. Running in Windows 98 (or try 95) compatibility mode will play the intro and other videos.
6. The mouse cursor has random lag on menus but everything is smooth in game.
7. Going to the in-game graphics options can make the screen go weird or crash the game. You can use your graphics card's control panel to set custom settings for Heavy Gear 2. In my NVIDIA Control Panel I set:
- Anisotropic filtering : 16x
- Antialiasing - FXAA : Off (Turning it on might help gameplay but it makes menus fuzzy)
- Antialiasing - Mode : Override
- Antialiasing - Setting : 8x
- Antialiasing - Transparency : 8x
8 You will probably have to run the Culling Fix to stop in-game graphical glitches

9. Sometimes certain menus will crash the game. It's been reported that if you hold the ESC key while clicking through the menus it will stop the game from crashing.
10. If it still doesn't work, you can try the steps here for Windows 10

NOTE ON LIQUIDSKY SPONSORSHIP
Over my years on YouTube, the channel has grown to a point where I get contacted now and again for sponsorship deals. However, I'm extremely particular of who I partner with and have turned down sponsorships from energy drinks, figurine manufacturers, and a myriad of mobile games. LiquidSky stood out because it's a piece of technology that I have been talking about for years but never seen an effective implementation of. I talked about it on the channel in this video first: https://youtu.be/1YH_KpqG-E4 After trying LiquidSky myself, although I have a bit of lag due to where I live being far away from the servers, it worked better than I expected and I decided to explore the idea of sponsorship. With the recent 'adpocalypse' on YouTube cutting into everyone's ad revenue, the occasional sponsor can help support channels and keep things afloat. I am still very careful with how I'm going about this and am open to any feedback you might have about the method and choice of sponsorship. Just let me know on any platform you like.
'#Abandonware' is not a legal term but I always try to source games from Archive.org, a website that is a recognised public library and has a DMCA exception.
