Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders - The Ossuary Part I: Catafalque
Following the great success that both Heretic and Hexen achieved, Raven Software decided to revisit their older title Heretic and create two further episodes for the game. Released in 1996, Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders didn't include any new content other than approximately 20 new levels, but once again the expansion was released as a free patch to those who already owned Heretic.
The Ossuary is the first of these two new episodes. After Corvus travels through the final portal in D'Sparil's Keep, he finds himself in a world already destroyed and conquered by the Serpent Riders centuries ago.
Compared to the first three episodes, these two new episodes are much, much more difficult, as you will soon see. The problem for me was that the first level simply didn't have enough ammunition (thinking about it I should have used the Gauntlets of the Necromancer more, so that's partially my fault) and the second level is just way too difficult when you start with nothing.
Catafalque immediately introduces the new episode with a bang - as even in the very first room there are many Gargoyles to fight off with very little room to maneuver around, and the difficulty quickly ramps up from there. Fighting a Maulotaur in the very first level is also a new first for Heretic!
