I played around and did a three color cycle checkerboard pattern (Ride/White/Blue & Orange/Yellow/Green) and I also swapped the edge pieces to give it that jagged look. It reminds me of something that Pinhead would have. Anyway, I really liked the end result and decided to record a video of it for posterity. Sadly, I have no clue about doing this with an algorithm. I just solved it this way.
