History Is Watching...
PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION:
HISTORY IS WATCHING...
Although this wasn't posted at an earlier time, I wanted to try and bring up this topic as best as possible, and in my own way with the video and these paragraphs of text you're reading right now . It may not be perfect, and I'm sure there's stuff I'll have missed but here we go. Right now is a time of need, a need for a better and more equal society. Hundreds and thousands of people are protesting peacefully throughout the streets in pursuit for racial equality, after the death of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department sent shock waves around the globe. George Floyd was killed whilst in police custody, in which one of the police officers kneeled on the back of his neck for a grand total of 8 MINUTES AND 46 SECONDS!!! Throughout the encounter, Mr Floyd begged and pleaded with the officer and his three colleagues in blue, stating 'I CAN'T BREATHE...'. Despite this fact, the officer continued to suffocate the life out of him, continuing to kneel on his neck even after he'd lost consciousness... Many unaware of the situation might ask, 'What was this man arrested for?, Surely he commuted a serious crime such as murder?' and if that's the case you'd be sadly mistaken. George Floyd was murdered in police custody due to allegedly purchasing a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 note...
This is just one death from a long list of innocent black people murdered recently, with other victims such as Breonna Taylor, an emergency medical worker, who was shot multiple times in her own home whilst police stormed the house, searching for a suspect that was already in police custody, or Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed man who was wrongly accused and murdered for a burglary he had no involvement in whilst out on a peaceful jog. These are just some victims of these brutal murders, with the list going on and on.
People are hurting right now, and hundreds of thousands of people, all around the globe are joining hand in hand to peacefully protest these terrible atrocities. From peacefully marching throughout the streets, chanting together to make their voices heard, to a frenzy of social media posts and hashtags, helping to spreading awareness of the racial inequalities worldwide.
So many people around the world are showing their support, and helping to spread awareness for this movement worldwide, and everyone is showing support for it in their own, unique ways. In saying that, I wanted to show my support for it in the way that I know how, a way I used many times during my schooling to express and share information and learning, and that is through content creation. Even though in my position I probably will never understand the true extent and pain suffered by black people as a result of the past, I hope to be apart of a better tomorrow, and I hope to give some of you hope too, a hope that one day we can live in a society that is truly racially equal.
There are many ways you can help support the cause, and the Floyd family through this tragic situation. Some of these ways include:
1. If you've got some spare change around, donating to the official George Floyd GoFundMe pages linked below, which help support the family with the memorial, counselling and court costs throughout this ordeal, as well as a fund to help support and provide for George Floyd's daughter Gianna, and her mother.
2. If you want to help on social media, you can help by sharing, and re-posting Black Lives Matter posts such as this one, and by the many others supporters for the cause around the world.
3 And finally, if there's one nearby, you can attend and join in with the marches, to help peoples voices on the Black Lives Matter movement be heard.
(I'll also post a link below to a Google Doc page for people who want to see and share ways they can help the Indigenous Lives Matter cause in Australia)
History is watching... And in 50, 60, 70 years time, our children and grandchildren will learn about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement from 2020, just like we did when learning about Martin Luther King Jr and the Civil Rights movement from the 1950's and 60's... and you'll have to answer to them one day about what you said, what you did, or what you didn't do, whilst your fellow humans we're hurting so much, because at the end of the day, no matter the colour of our skin, we are all apart of the human race...
If you've made it this far, thank you for taking the time out of your day to read and/or watch this post, and I hope that we can all work together to be apart of a better, more equal tomorrow.
