History of Granada, from the Iberians to the Muslims.
Granada was a small Iberian oppidum on the Albaicin hill initially called Ilturir. When the Romans arrived in Iberia, the city was added into the Roman empire as a municipality which they called Iliberis and later or Florentia Iliberritana. After the Roman empire fell, the Visigoths took the city, but it declined and was nearly abandoned by the 7th century. Under Muslim rule, Granada was rebuilt, and by the 11th century it became the regional capital of the Zirid dynasty. Under the Emirate of Granada, the city entered its golden age and was the last remaining Muslim city in Spain until 1492.
