Holly Washa was 21 years old when she was raped, tortured and murdered in Seattle, Washington in May of 1991. Shortly after midnight on September 10, 2010, the man accused of Washa's murder, Cal Coburn Brown, was executed by lethal injection for his crimes after spending 16 years on death row.

Washa's family members witnessed Brown's execution at the Washington State Penitentiary. Seattle's KPLU news reports that Brown "didn't directly apologize" to Washa's family before he was put to death. Instead, Brown read a statement that said, among other things, that "the justice system had treated him unfairly."

Washa's family members told reporters in a press conference after the execution that while nothing can bring Washa back, "it's enough that Brown is gone." Washa's father, John Washa, said of Brown: "He's a very bad person, he did a bad thing to her which he didn't need to do. And with this tonight it brought more closure instead of more hatred. I just feel better now, I'm just more at peace."

At the time Brown abducted Holly Washa, he'd just been released from prison in Oregon. According to authorities, Brown raped and tortured Washa for 24 hours before he strangled her. The Associated Press says Brown then fled to California, where he was arrested for assaulting another woman. He confessed to Washa's murder there and eventually led police to Washa's body, which was found "inside the trunk of a car."

Brown had a long rap sheet. The AP says Brown had a "history of violence against women," having been convicted of assaulting women in California and Oregon in the 1970s and 80s. Brown's execution was the first in Washington state since 2001.
