0The Braves are home for the Home Opener, where they face their next division rivals, the Washington Nationals.
Oddly enough, this is one rivalry in which the onus is on the Nationals to convince everyone that it’s a real rivalry. Ever since their extended run of dominance in the 1990s and early 2000s, the Braves have seen themselves as the preeminent team in the NL East. Any team that can challenge them will immediately become a rival. The Nationals, to their credit, have won a few division titles over the years. But they need to keep it up if they want the Braves to consider them a rivalry.
Fortunately, both teams have a wonderful home ballpark to help build a rivalry. The Braves have the brand new SunTrust Park, which opened in 2017 and has all of the bells and whistles that fans could possibly want in a ballpark. Of course, Nationals Park in the nation’s capital isn’t bad either. It’s a fan-friendly park that does a great job of recognizing the history of baseball in Washington that predates the arrival of the Nationals.
