Horizon Zero Dawn is an open world action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective developed by Guerilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Horizon Zero Dawn’s story is set in a post-apocalyptic 31st century Earth that is dominated by large robotic machines. Humans try to peacefully coexist with the machines but over time the machines have become more aggressive towards humans and new larger deadlier machines have also appeared. The humans live in primitive tribes known as the Nora, the Banuk, the Carja, and the Oseram, each with differentiating levels of technological development, who occasionally hunt the machines for parts.
Players control the main character named Aloy who is a young hunter living in the United States between Colorado, Wyoming and Utah where she is on a personal quest to uncover her unknown past. Aloy uses ranged weapons, a bow and spear, plus stealth to defeat the machines as well as other human enemies such as bandits and the Eclipse cult. Aloy wears a small earpiece device called a Focus, that has the ability to scan the machines and determine their weaknesses, location, threat level, and the loot they will drop. Aloy also has the ability to craft ammo, modify her weapons, set traps using a Tripcaster and hack the machines with an Override Tool. A skill tree is available to players for improving Aloy’s stealth, combat and healing abilities.
Horizon Zero Dawn released exclusively for PlayStation 4 on February 28, 2017. A PC version was released on August 7, 2020, and a remastered version released for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 31, 2024.
